LEATHER TANNING: EXPLANATION OF THE TANNING PROCESS
The manufacture of leather involves several stages, such as drying, hardening, tanning and finally dyeing.
→ Why does leather need to be tanned?
Passing through the tannery is necessary for leather because if the raw hide is not tanned, it will rot and putrefy. The tanner will magnify the hides, preventing putrefaction and preparing it for a wide variety of final applications.
Tanning also changes the appearance of the hide. This change depends on the chemical processes and tanning agents used. Several trades come into play to give hides and skins their suppleness and smoothness!
